COLWOOD NATIONAL GOLF COURSE
PORTLAND, OR

Colwood National Golf Course is located just a hop, skip, and a jump over the I-205 bridge from Vancouver, which is a great bonus for us.  The location and the fact that you can play this beautiful, excellently maintained course for just $11 for 9 holes or $21 for 18 holes if you have the Entertainment Book or Golf Card make this one of our favorite places to play.  With the book, you can also buy three green fees and get one free.

COLWOOD NATIONAL GOLF COURSE - OUR COMMENTS

Maintenance:  Probably the best kept public golf course we've played so far in the area.  Lush, green fairways, well-aerated greens, and very green and nicely kept rough.  Makes for a lovely course.

Scenery: Very green fairways and roughs are complemented with nature as you walk over bridges crossing back and forth over the Columbia and Whitaker Sloughs.  You can watch herons and killdeers looking for food while you walk.   The only downside is between the 7th and 8th hole where you have to walk along a major roadway where it seems there could have easily been a bridge over the slough.  Arbor Vitae hedges block out the roadway from the rest of the holes.

Fun: Hitting back and forth over the natural hazard of the slough makes for a fun game.  This isn't the most difficult course around, and there are some long, straight fairways, but there are also several dog-legs, some hills (especially the 9th hole), and quite a bit of variety.

Safety: Most of the course is nicely laid out for this.  Private holes without balls flying at you. The exception is crossing back and forth across fairly busy Alderwood Drive.  Rather than having you cross at a stop sign nearby, you cross in the middle of the street as cars go by at about 50 miles per hour.  No signs really to warn the cars of golfer crossing either.  Pretty dangerous, we think.

Staff:  They seem nice enough, but they made a big hassle for us when we tried to use our Entertainment Book discount of 20% off.  They tried to claim we needed a coupon when that's not the case according to the Entertainment Book.  In the end, though, they gave in and we got our discount.

Design: Very enjoyable layout - well incorporated into Columbia and Whitaker Sloughs for maximum enjoyment.  Good variety and layout for safety.  Nice dog-legs on some holes.  Not too hard, but fun for a public course. The only exception, of course, is between holes 8 and 9 and stated above.

Value:  For the $11 for 9 holes or $21 for 18 holes you'll pay with the Entertainment Book or the Golf Card,  this course is a heck of a value for the money.

Other Comments:  There are golf leagues at this course too - kind of fun.  There is a large restaurant area for banquets and the like.  You'd never know it was in the middle of the industrial district.  We just love how green it is.
