Body recovered: Divers with long poles on Thursday found the body of Portland resident Lauren Orton, 32, who was thrown from a whitewater raft into the Wind River in Skamania County on April 27.

The body was recovered about 3:30 p.m., in the same waterfall two miles north of Carson where Orton disappeared, said Skamania County Sheriff Dave Brown.

Officers during the past six weeks had looked intensively for the body in an area too turbulent for divers. On Thursday they decided to return because the water level had fallen about one foot.

The Skamania County Sheriff's Dive Team, coordinated by Sgt. Arne Gonser, consists of two deputies and volunteers, Brown said.
